A unique decoration for your cake...
One of the most unique decorations you can create for
your cake involves using cookie cutters to make clever patterns or shapes
onto your cake. Select (from your own collection or purchase one from
your local retailer) a unique shape which relates to your cake theme.
It could be a person, animal, shape, flower, item, etc. - whatever you
feel best suits your needs. After you ice and smooth your cake, imprint/press
the cookie cutter into the cake to create the outline. You can then
use a colored buttercream to trace the outline and then fill-in the
outline using one of the various star tips (using the triangle fill-in
method) with colored buttercream icing. This will create a very innovative
and eye-catching effect for your cake - and don't forget you can do
this on the top and side of a cake - use your imagination!
For fondant cakes, you can use the same technique - once
the fondant has been rolled and placed onto a cake, simply imprint the
cookie cutter into the fondant and fill-in the shape. Or, you can actually
use the cookie cutter to cut a piece of extra fondant to place on the
cake as the desired shape - you can experiment with different colors
for very imaginative decorations.
