For the overbaked cake...
Okay, so something went wrong and your cake is overbaked
and has a burnt top edge...
Don't panic and throw out the cake layer thinking its
going to taste awful - instead, follow the below procedure to salvage
the cake layer:
.1. First, horizontally cut the cake layer to just below
the burnt portion.
2. Create a "simple syrup" by mixing sugar and
water together until dissolved. If desired, add any flavoring (vanilla,
lemon, etc.) to this mixture for variety.
3. With a pastry brush or spoon, spread the syrup over
the cake and it will magically, re-moisten the cake.
4. Wrap the cake layer in plastic wrap and place in the
freezer for future use.
